Injury of nociceptor nerves after anterior segment eye sugery often evokes spontaneous, aberrant activity at the neuromas formed by regenerating axons, which become abnormally sensitive to mechanical force, evoking neuropathic pain (Gallar et al. IOVS, 2007). This activity is expected be reduced by blockade of PIEZO2 with topical PIEZ02 antagonist administration.
Lubrication déficit in Dry Eye Disease (DED) enhances mechanical shear forces produced by blinking which cause corneal attrition and augments corneal nociceptor activity, evoking pain sensations and neurogenic inflammation (vanSetten Int J Mol Sci 2020).Enhanced mechanosensory activity could be attenuated by PIEZO2 blockaed , potentially benefiting DED patients who perceive as painful the normal movement of lids.
